SPRINGFIELD – Today, the Papal conclave elected a new Pope to succeed the late Pope Francis as leader of the Catholic Church. The conclave selected Robert Prevost, the first American to ever be elected as Pope. In response, State Representative Brad Fritts (R-Dixon) released the following statement:
“As a proud Catholic, I join with my fellow Catholics around the world to celebrate as we welcome our new Pope!” said Rep. Fritts. “On the second day of deliberation, the Papal conclave selected Chicago-born Robert Prevost to assume the position as leader of the Catholic Church. I am incredibly excited to welcome our new Pope and have immense pride that he is the first ever American Pope, and hails from the great state of Illinois.
“This is a momentous day of joy and celebration for Catholics around the world. I will pray for our new Pope, who has chosen the name Pope Leo XIV, to receive the guidance and discernment of God as he takes on this new role. May God be with Pope Leo XIV!”
